Lisbon School No. 5 opened in 1844 on Road “16” and was named “16” School. It originally stood west of present Hillside Road, also called “16” Road. In the 1860s, a new one-room cream brick school was built. The original commissioner was Harrison Phillips, the clerk was R. Blount, and an early teacher was Samuel Tenny. Students ranged in age from 4 to 20 and remained ungraded until the 1900s. In 1920, graduates went on to the two-year high school in Sussex. “16” was consolidated with Sussex in December 1944. The old school was sold and became a home. A reunion of former students and teachers was held on July 28, 1991.
