At this location, after agreements were signed in a nearby building, Spanish and American soldiers gathered at a flagpole to lower the Spanish flag for the last time over Florida and raise the Stars and Stripes, officially placing Florida under American rule. With this act, Andrew Jackson became the first governor of Florida. The site is dedicated to the memory of the colonial-era events revealed through archaeological work and to Florida's beginning as part of the United States of America.
