Augustus Hill Garland, son of Rufus King and Barbara Hill Garland, was born in Tipton County on June 11, 1832. As a child he moved to Arkansas with his parents, where he later served as an attorney, a Confederate congressman and senator from 1861 to 1865, governor from 1874 to 1877, and U.S. senator from 1877 to 1885. In 1885 President Grover Cleveland appointed him U.S. attorney general, and he served until 1889. Garland died while arguing a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was the brother of Confederate congressman Rufus K. Garland, Jr. and a cousin of Gen. Cadmus M. Wilcox, C.S.A.
