Green Island Bridge crosses the Hudson River between Troy and Green Island by way of Center Island in eastern New York. The current road bridge opened on September 12, 1981, with a vertical-lift span used occasionally for river traffic. This crossing has a turbulent history: an 1832 wood-truss railroad bridge burned on May 10, 1862, after sparks from a locomotive ignited it, and the resulting fire spread into downtown Troy, destroying more than 500 buildings over 75 acres. Later bridges served rail, vehicles, trolleys, and pedestrians until a flood-triggered collapse in 1977. The site reflects nearly 150 years of rebuilding, transportation change, and major bridge disasters.
