Camp County was formed from Upshur County, created on April 6, 1874, and organized on June 20, 1874. It was named in honor of John Lafayette Camp, 1828-1891, a soldier, lawyer, and statesman who was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1866 and a state senator in 1874. Pittsburg is the county seat.
