George Washington visited York, Pennsylvania on five different occasions: in 1751 en route to the land office in Philadelphia; in 1773 on his return from New York, where he had taken his stepson Jack Custis to Kings College, now Columbia University; on July 2, 1791, while president and on a tour of the United States; on September 30, 1794, upon his return from reviewing the troops at Bedford during the Whiskey Insurrection; and in March 1797 following his retirement from the presidency.
