In 1843, Presbyterian missionaries Rev. S.R. Riggs and R. Hopkins, their wives, and Jane Williamson established a mission church and school at Traverse des Sioux for Indians and others. In 1853, the first Free Presbyterian church at Traverse des Sioux was organized with 14 members. In 1858, a stone church was erected at Traverse des Sioux at a cost of $5000. In 1857, the First Presbyterian Church of St. Peter was organized by Rev. A.H. Kerr with 13 members. In 1869, the congregations of Traverse des Sioux and St. Peter merged. In 1871, the present stone church was erected at a cost of $15,000.
