Pigeon Mountain in northwestern Georgia rises about 2,330 feet on the Cumberland Plateau and forms a V-shape with Lookout Mountain around McLemore Cove. Known for features such as Dug Gap, The Pocket, Rocktown, and major caves including Ellison's Cave and Petty John's Cave, it is largely protected within the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Its name is uncertain, possibly tied to the mountain’s outline or to pigeons seen by early settlers. The mountain also figured in the Battle of Davis's Cross Roads in September 1863. A small mountain community persisted into the 1930s, and the state leased the mountain in 1969.
