Vail Mountain is a 1,404-foot summit in Iron County in southeastern Missouri, about 3 miles southwest of Arcadia and Ironton, with Russell Mountain nearby to the west. It is closely associated with the local road network: Missouri Route CC passes just west of it on the way toward Taum Sauk Mountain, and Routes 21 and 72 cross its south spur before running through Royal Gorge. The mountain was named for the local Vail family, reflecting the area’s settlement history. It remains a recognized high point in the Arcadia Valley landscape, known chiefly for its geography and its links to surrounding routes and neighboring mountains.
