Driftwood Cemetery originated in 1884 when the Driftwood Methodist Episcopal Church, South, built a sanctuary here on two acres acquired from David L. and Mattie Elizabeth Dorrah, and the cemetery was established later that year on part of the churchyard immediately south of the sanctuary. It replaced an older burial ground founded in the 1870s about one mile north, known as the old Community Cemetery, and several burials from that graveyard, including those of many early settlers of the area, were removed and reinterred here. Those buried here include trustees of the Driftwood Methodist Church who helped establish the cemetery: James Thomas Eckols, Sr. (1841-1911), Thomas Martin (1821-1901), and the Rev. John Alexander Garrison (1849-1933), a prominent Methodist circuit preacher. Reflecting the heritage of the area, the cemetery contains the graves of community and church leaders and at least eight veterans of the American Civil War, and it continues in use under the care of the Driftwood Cemetery Association.
