The Giant Dipper roller coaster, known for its red and white structure, views of Monterey Bay, and fast dips and curves, has thrilled more than 50 million riders and kept generations returning. Built by Arthur Looff, it is one-half mile long, reaches speeds up to 55 MPG, rises 70 feet at its main hill, lasts 1 minute and 52 seconds, carries 24 riders per train on 2 trains, and ranks as the sixth oldest in the U.S. In 1987, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. In 1924, the ride cost 15 cents, and Herb Caen called it "a tooth-loosener, eyeball-popper, and one long shriek."
