In May 1812, at War Chief Francis Godfroy's Council Chambers, twelve tribes of the N.W. Territory voted not to join the English, while Tecumseh objected and joined Canada. Across the road stood Godfroy's trading post and Mount Pleasant home, and about 1 1/4 mile South 70 degrees West on the left bank of the river in the Osage village among the Miamis were buried some 25 Indians killed when General Harrison's army sacked the village in 1812. Here on October 23, 1826, the Michigan Road, the Wabash and Erie Canal, and much land were ceded to the government.
