Grissom Air Museum near Grissom Air Reserve Base in Peru, Indiana preserves the military aviation history of the site through more than twenty outdoor aircraft, indoor exhibits, and a Cold War-era observation tower. It grew from a 1981 effort by John Crume and six other veterans to save aircraft at the base, opening outside the north main gate in 1987 and adding an indoor building in 1991. After overcoming funding and leadership challenges in the early 1990s, it passed from the United States Air Force Museum system to Indiana’s state museum system in 1995 before leaving that network in 2010. Its displays trace the airfield’s changing identity from World War Two onward.
