The 28th Pennsylvania Infantry served in the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 12th Corps. It was mustered in at Philadelphia, PA., on June 26th, 1861, re-enlisted as veteran volunteers at Wauhatchie, Tennessee, on December 23rd, 1863, and mustered out at Philadelphia, PA., on July 18th, 1865. In the Chattanooga Campaign of November 1863, it took part in the assault and capture of Lookout Mountain on November 24th, the assault and capture of Missionary Ridge (Rossville Gap) on November 25th, the engagement at Pea Vine Creek on November 26th, and the assault and capture of Taylor's Ridge at Ringgold on November 27th. Its losses in the campaign were 13 killed and died of wounds, 21 wounded, for a total of 34.
