James Marion Sims, a world-famed physician and father of modern gynaecology, was born in the farmhouse of his parents near this site on January 25, 1813. A doctor to empress and slave alike, he founded the Women’s Hospital of the State of New York, was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor of France, was honored by European and American governments, and died in the City of New York on November 13, 1883.
