Strawberry Chapel and the Childsbury town site on Strawberry Bluff preserve the remains of a planned colonial town and an early Anglican chapel near the West Branch of the Cooper River. Childsbury, settled in 1707 on land granted to James Child, was laid out with broad streets, public squares, and space for civic and religious institutions, and for a time supported a ferry, tavern, school, chapel, store, and tradespeople before declining by 1750. Built in 1725, Strawberry Chapel served St. John's, Berkeley Parish and later replaced Biggin Church as the parish church. The chapel and neighboring town site were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
