With Stuart's Cavalry Division in the Army of Northern Virginia, Jones's Brigade included the 6th, 7th, 11th, and 12th Cavalry Regiments and the 35th Virginia Cavalry Battalion. On July 1, the 12th Regiment was detached and remained on the south side of the Potomac River, and White's 35th Virginia Battalion was also detached, while the remaining regiments crossed the Potomac at Williamsport, Maryland. On July 2, the brigade marched from near Greencastle, Pennsylvania, to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. On July 3, it marched from Chambersburg by way of Cashtown to Fairfield, Pennsylvania, where it met the 6th U.S. Cavalry about two miles from Fairfield; the 7th Virginia charged in advance and was repulsed, then the 6th Virginia charged in support and forced the Union regiment to retire with heavy losses, after which the brigade encamped at Fairfield for the night. On July 4, the brigade held the mountain passes and picketed the army's left flank. Its casualties were 11 killed, 30 wounded, and 3 missing, for a total of 47.
