During the War Between the States, Letcher Countians suffered on both the battlefield and the homefront, serving in both Union and Confederate units. Kentucky-born President Abraham Lincoln, born in Hodgenville from 1809 to 1865, led the Union, while Kentucky-born President Jefferson Davis, born in Fairview from 1808 to 1889, led the Confederacy. Union service included the 14th Kentucky Infantry, 14th Kentucky Cavalry, 47th Kentucky Infantry, Three Forks Battalion, and 39th Kentucky Mounted Rifles. Confederate service included the 5th Kentucky Infantry, 7th Confederate Cavalry, 10th Kentucky Cavalry, 10th Kentucky Mounted Rifles, 13th Kentucky Cavalry, 21st Virginia Infantry, 64th Virginia Cavalry, and 50th Virginia Infantry.
