North Fork of the Pound is a protected, roadless wildland in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests of western Virginia, valued for its seclusion, rugged terrain, and rich habitat. Reached mainly by trail or by boat from North Fork of Pound Lake, it includes old logging roads and railroad grades from early twentieth-century timbering, streams flowing toward the North Fork of the Pound River, varied forest communities, and up to 153 acres of old-growth forest. The area supports black bear, Swainson's warbler, the eastern small-footed bat, and elk, and it also contains historic and prehistoric sites. Protected in Forest Service planning, it has also faced opposition to proposed gas development.
