In 1916, Jakes Corner, originally called Felton, began as a stage stop on the Annie Hardt homestead. As a pullout on the road to Globe, stages stopped there while the occasionally flooding Salt River receded. Annie Hardt kept a vegetable stand where passersby left her requested payment in a collection box for her to pick up later. In 1924, George Felton built the first store. With the advent of motorized travel and the completion of Roosevelt Dam, the place became a popular stop for repairing oil pans, tires, and fuel tanks along the arduous Apache Trail journey. George and his wife Virginia operated the store for sixteen years, with Virginia serving as the main caretaker while George, drawn by an adventurous cowboy life, performed in Wild West shows worldwide with his friend Charlie Meadows. After the Feltons, Polly Brown of Payson operated the store for six years. Jake and Nina Stephenson then bought the place and renamed the area Jakes Corner. It remains a popular stop for travelers headed to the Rim Country or Roosevelt Lake, especially for local residents of the Tonto Basin area.
