South Pacific Diesel Locomotive SD-45 #7457 was the first SD-45 built for the Southern Pacific Railroad, which eventually purchased 355 more and had the largest fleet of SD-45 locomotives in the nation. As the next logical step in the search for power to pull freight, it hauled freight from Ogden, Utah over Donner Summit to the west coast, a climb of nearly 2800 feet. Built in 1966, it weighed 370,000 pounds, was 65 feet, 8 inches long, used a 3600-horsepower General Motors Electro-Motive Division 645E3 V120 diesel engine, carried 4000 gallons of diesel fuel, had a top speed of 65 miles per hour, was retired on February 7, 2001, and was originally numbered 8800.
