WSM radio first went on the air in 1925 with a live broadcast featuring Governor Austin Peay, the Francis Craig Orchestra, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The WSM Barn Dance, begun in 1925, was renamed the Grand Ole Opry in 1927 after an ad-lib comment by announcer George D. Hay. In 1932, before the City of Brentwood existed, the WSM Tower was erected there because its geographic location and bedrock made the site suitable for the massive structure. At 878 feet, it was then the tallest tower in the United States and second in height only to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which stood at 1060 feet, but engineers later found it was too tall for technical reasons, so its top was removed and donated to Lipscomb Elementary School for use as a flagpole. In 1943 WSM's Grand Ole Opry moved to the Ryman Auditorium, and in 1974 it moved again to the Grand Ole Opry House. During the Roaring 20's, Americans gathered around radios for lectures, opera, and sermons, but the program that became known as the WSM Grand Ole Opry quickly gained enormous popularity, reaching hundreds of thousands of listeners in 35 states through the tower. The small white building below the tower houses transmitting equipment, includes a bomb shelter room, and contains a direct communications link to the President of the United States. Each supporting cable measures 2.5 inches in diameter and weighs 8,000 pounds. The call letters WSM stand for "We Shield Millions," the advertising slogan of the former National Life and Accident Insurance Company, WSM's original owner. The WSM Grand Ole Opry is the longest-running live radio program in history, advertisers such as Martha White Flour and Goo Goo Clusters Candy became especially famous through it, WSM helped make country music and Nashville known throughout the world, and the tower has a twin built outside Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1933 that also had to be shortened and now stands 747 feet tall.
