WSM Broadcasting Transmitter and Antenna began operation October 5, 1932, the anniversary of WSM's founding in 1925 by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company of Nashville. WSM-AM operates on a clear channel frequency of 650 kilohertz with power of 50,000 watts. It originated the Grand Ole Opry in 1925 and has continued to broadcast this world famous program on a regular basis. The unique tower, 878 feet high, was the tallest radio tower in the United States at the time of its erection. It sits on a large porcelain insulator and is held vertical by eight insulated steel cables.
