Bodega Head is a small Pacific promontory in northern California that shelters Bodega Bay and Bodega Harbor, with beaches, dunes, trails, protected marine waters, and notable whale and shark activity offshore. It is also a center of scientific research through the University of California, Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory and Reserve. Before European arrival, Coast Miwok people probably lived here, and Campbell Cove has been considered a possible site of Sir Francis Drake’s 1579 landing. The headland is especially significant geologically: lying just west of the San Andreas Fault, it shifted about 15 feet in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and its tectonic setting helped halt a planned nuclear power plant in 1964.
