During Utah's Black Hawk War of 1865–1872, local Mormon settlers massacred members of the Koosharem Band of the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah at Circleville on April 22–24, 1866. Paiute oral tradition recalls that in Circleville, Utah, white men locked up the nearby Indians in a large log house beside the road and said they were going to cut their throats. They then began taking them outside one at a time and killing them. Two young men inside decided to escape by dashing through the men as the door opened. They ran toward the cemetery on the hill to the north, and one pursuing white man on horseback shot one of them in the side by his ribs, but it was only a flesh wound. The two then ran into the mountains, where the wounded man treated the injury with Indian medicine and part of his shirt, and because the pursuers did not follow far, they continued on to Parowan or Beaver.
