The Granbury Light Plant preserves early twentieth-century power-generation technology centered on original Fairbanks Morse equipment, much of it still in place as it was when the plant produced electricity. Built in 1923 as state-of-the-art technology, the plant includes three Fairbanks Morse generating units with a combined output of 303 kilowatts, enough to supply 100 homes today, along with two 3 horsepower Fairbanks Morse units that supplied compressed air to fill four tanks used to start the large diesel engines. Its original pressure gauges, knife-blade switchgear for connecting and disconnecting generators from the distribution system, and water pumps used to supply the city and cool the engines also remain, though the pumps are no longer functional. Granbury’s path to electric light and water service began with local calls for modernization, including a 1902 appeal in the Granbury News, followed by the City Council’s granting of an electric light franchise in 1903. On this property, the Frisco Ice and Gin Co. was built in 1904 with an ice factory, cold storage plant, cotton gin, and bottling works, and in 1905 it proposed a waterworks system and acquired the light franchise. After several unsuccessful efforts to build a viable light company, a 1923 bond election approved a new water system and electric power plant, and the city soon purchased the light business for $13,000. Housed in a fireproof natural stone building with a corrugated iron roof supported by steel trusses, the plant was upgraded as demand increased, including two engine upgrades before World War II. In 1949 Granbury began purchasing power from the Brazos Electric Cooperative, after which the plant mainly supplemented service during generation problems and remained operational through the 1960s. Former mayor Hugh Raupe and operator Weldon Newman helped keep the system intact, and by 1991 it was working again under the care of the Granbury Flywheelers, a branch of the National Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association. Among the surviving machinery, Unit Number 1 is a Fairbanks Morse Model 32E14 two-cylinder diesel engine installed in 1939 in place of the original 1923 engine, producing 150 horsepower at 257 rpm and generating 100 kilowatts at 2400 volts; Unit Number 2 is the original 1923 Fairbanks Morse Type Y-V “hot plug” engine, started by heating its glow plug with a kerosene blowtorch and producing 50 horsepower at 257 rpm and 50 kilowatts at 2400 volts; and Unit Number 3, installed in 1930 and later converted in 1940 from a Fairbanks Morse three-cylinder Model Y into a Model 32, produced 180 horsepower at 256 rpm and 180 kilowatts at 2400 volts.
