Monarch Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in California’s Sierra Nevada, east of Fresno, spanning rugged country in Sequoia and Sierra National Forests. Created by the California Wilderness Act of 1984 from the former High Sierra Primitive Area, it ranges from low chaparral to alpine granite heights and is divided by State Route 180 into north and south units. Its deep Kings River canyons, high ridges, giant sequoia groves, and rare native plants make it ecologically diverse and scenic. Known for remote backcountry travel, it offers trails, limited water in some seasons, and access to nearby protected lands in Kings Canyon.
