Grand Sentinel
Nature
Grand Sentinel is an 8,518-foot mountain in California’s Kings Canyon National Park, just west of the main Sierra Nevada crest at the northern end of the Great Western Divide. Rising immediately south of Kanawyers and Zumwalt Meadow, it is especially notable for its steep, pillar-like form and dramatic relief. Its north face climbs nearly 3,500 feet above the canyon floor in only half a mile, creating an abrupt and striking presence in the landscape. The mountain lies in an alpine climate zone, where Pacific weather systems bring rain and snow through orographic lift, and its runoff drains into the South Fork Kings River.
