These ruins are underground chambers called kivas, pit-like structures once built below ground, square or round, with pine columns and floors paved with large smooth slabs. Inside was a fireplace where a handful of brush was burned for heat, and some were large enough to be used for a ball game. Pueblo Indians today still conduct many of their religious ceremonies in similar kivas, although they are now generally built above ground. According to the quoted account, young men lived in the estufas, and if a man repudiated his wife he had to come to the estufa, while women were punished if they slept there or entered for any purpose other than bringing food to their husbands or sons.
