Thousands lie forgotten in unmarked graves throughout present-day Haskell County, Oklahoma, formerly Sans Bois County in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. From the late 1840s until the first days of the Civil War, travelers moved west along the Beale Road and the California Trail seeking the West's promised riches, only to die and be buried far short of their goal. During the Civil War, countless people were lost to combat and to the camp diseases that plagued soldiers. Others died from the opening of Indian lands in the 1890s until the desperate days of the 1930s Depression because of violence, accident, and rampant epidemics that swept the countryside. Their graves lie beside old wagon roads, in lost Civil War camps and battlefields, and in the county's many active and abandoned cemeteries.
