Albert Fielding Lang, known as “Uncle Al,” was born on Nov. 16, 1870, and died on Feb. 27, 1960. He came to Florida in 1911 and served as mayor of St. Petersburg from 1916 to 1918 and from 1918 to 1920. He was the founding president of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, brought the St. Louis Browns to St. Petersburg in 1914, promoted the city as the center and Florida as the capital of Major League spring training, and was known affectionately as Mister Baseball.
