Mount Harkness Fire Lookout stood in Lassen Volcanic National Park near Mineral, California, at 7,985 feet, where it served as part of the park’s long-running fire detection system and remained staffed and open during summer. Built in 1931 in a classic rustic National Park Service design, it featured a compact cab, log catwalk and railings, and a stone tower. By 2019 it was one of fewer than 40 operating National Park Service fire lookouts, making it a rare survivor from an earlier era of wildfire surveillance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017, it was destroyed in the Dixie Fire in 2021.
