Broadhead Massacre
Military
5
On April 20, 1781, near the spring, Col. Daniel Broadhead's army of 300 massacred 20 Indians after destroying that same day the two villages of Goschachgunk (Coshocton) and Indaochaic, formerly Lichtenau, the Moravian mission. The first act of the incident was the stealthful tomahawk slaying of a chief who came across the river as a peace emissary by the Indian fighter Lewis Wetzel. The night before, 16 warrior captives had been taken south of Coshocton, bound, slain by tomahawk, and scalped.
