Barnesville Petroglyph, on a wooded hilltop southwest of Barnesville in eastern Ohio, is one of the state’s notable rock art sites despite twentieth-century damage. Native American people carved its sandstone boulders centuries ago, though their exact identity is uncertain. Scholars have linked the site variously to the Adena and to Ojibwe-influenced people of the Monongahela culture. The main boulder bears 113 recorded designs, including tracks, bird prints, human faces and feet, geometric figures, snakes, and pits, earning the local name Track Rocks. Long documented by researchers, the site and its surrounding archaeological landscape gained National Register recognition in 1974.
