Spencer State Forest is a protected forest and recreation area in Spencer, Massachusetts, made up of three separate parcels across hills, creeks, wetlands, and mixed woodland. Its best-known section, the Howe Pond parcel, was once the estate of Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine, and includes a mill pond and dam he built. The forest is tied together by the Midstate Trail, which links these parcels with nearby conservation lands and waters. Features such as Buck Hill, Turkey Hill Brook, Howe Pond, and the Depot Trail support hiking, fishing, and hand-carried boating, while part of the property also remains in state logging use.
