Wells State Park in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, brings together Walker Pond, the cliff face of Carpenter Rocks, wetlands, wooded slopes, and rocky ledges in a notably rugged landscape. Its forests include oak-hickory, northern hardwoods, and groves of eastern white pine. Carpenter Rocks, named for sawmill operator John Carpenter, is a well-known destination with views over the eastern part of Walker Pond and the surrounding wooded valley. The park offers 12 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing, as well as boating and fishing on the 104-acre pond, camping, restricted hunting, and seasonal interpretive programs.
