Southern Illinois College was the alma mater of United States Senators William E. Borah of Idaho and Wesley L. Jones of Washington. The educational institution was chartered by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1873. From the 1890's until 1935, it was a public school. In 1967, the Kiwanis Club and Enfield citizens purchased it for use as a community center.
