Wilson Mounds and Village Site in southern Illinois preserves one of the state's surviving Hopewell archaeological landscapes, centered on twelve burial mounds, an associated village area, and a prehistoric cemetery near Rising Sun. Hopewell peoples lived there from about 400 B.C. to 400 A.D., and later excavations revealed links to a broad exchange network across eastern North America, with materials traced as far as North Carolina and the Lake Superior region. Archaeologists also identified two skeletal types, suggesting more than one cultural group was present. The site is significant for the evidence it preserves of settlement, trade, and burial practices over many centuries.
