James William Fullbright was a distinguished scholar, author, statesman, and leader who served as president of the University of Arkansas from 1939 to 1941, as a U.S. representative from 1943 to 1945, and as a U.S. senator from 1945 to 1974, including as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1959 to 1974. He authored the Fulbright Resolution for International Cooperation in 1943 and originated the Fulbright International Exchange Scholarship Program. He attended the University of Arkansas Training School from primary grades through high school, studied at the University of Arkansas from 1921 to 1925, earned a B.A. in 1925, was a Phi Beta Kappa member and football letterman in 1921, 1922, 1923, and 1924, became a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, earned B.A. and M.A. degrees there in 1926, and received an L.L.B. from George Washington University in 1934. He received numerous honorary degrees, including from the University of Arkansas, Oxford, Yale, Michigan, and New York University, and his vision and leadership in world affairs were demonstrated by accomplishments on behalf of education, industry, agriculture, and cultural exchange and understanding.
