Discovered in the mid-19th century, the strength and beauty of Stony Creek granite made it much in demand for many types of construction, and quarries sprang up to supply the unique pink granite for bridges, buildings, and monuments. By the start of the 20th century, the tourist trade was flourishing as visitors arrived by train, trolley, and ferry boat to enjoy the shoreline attractions, fresh seafood, and water sports, and gracious Victorian hotels were built to accommodate the summer influx. Entertainment has long been part of Stony Creek life: for over 130 years, the award-winning Stony Creek Fife and Drum Corps has played at parades, musters, and special occasions, and from 1903 until WWII, the Stony Creek Theater presented films and plays before becoming a Puppet House in the 1960's.
