On December 1, 1974, Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 6231, a Boeing 727 flying between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Buffalo, New York, encountered atmospheric icing and crashed at this site. The flight was operating as a ferry flight after being chartered to pick up the Baltimore Colts football team. The only people aboard were the three crew members, all of whom were killed. The accident and the subsequent federal investigation led to changes in cockpit design and advances in commercial pilot training used by airlines today.
