Folly Mills Creek Fen Natural Area Preserve
Nature
Folly Mills Creek Fen Natural Area Preserve is a 28-acre protected wetland in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, located in the floodplain of Folly Mills Creek, a tributary of Christians Creek. Dedicated in 1998 as the state’s first privately owned Natural Area Preserve, it safeguards a Shenandoah Valley fen fed by artesian springs rising from limestone bedrock aquifers. These conditions sustain a rare wetland plant community in a landscape where such habitats were once more common. The preserve is dominated by sedges, cattails, and shrubs, and also supports uncommon species such as bog buckbean, queen-of-the-prairie, and shining ladies’ tresses. Access is restricted and must be arranged in advance.
