Thomas Riley Marshall was born in 1854 in North Manchester in this house on Main Street. He was Governor of Indiana from 1909 to 1913. Under his leadership, the Indiana General Assembly enacted legislation called the Marshall Constitution to improve government efficiency by amending the constitution, but the Indiana Supreme Court declared the legislation unconstitutional on July 5, 1912. He was elected vice president in 1912 under Woodrow Wilson and generally supported Wilson's proposals. After Wilson's stroke in 1919, Marshall refused to assume the powers of the presidency because he believed doing so would be unconstitutional. He was only the third vice president to serve two full terms. He died in 1925 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
