Wiscasset might have become a transportation hub by rail and sea, but the timing of technology worked against it. The first coastal railroad was chartered in 1849, but no line was operating until the standard gauge Knox & Lincoln Railroad Company began service in 1871, by which time fewer cargo ships were coming to Wiscasset harbor. The Wiscasset & Quebec narrow gauge railroad opened in 1895 to carry freight to Canada, though the line to Quebec was never built. Reorganized in 1901 as the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railroad, it carried potatoes, poultry, lumber, feed, grain, woolen goods, coal, passengers, and mail between Wiscasset, Albion, and Winslow, Maine. At its height, the WW&F Railway had 90 freight cars, 6 passenger cars, and 7 engines, but it could not compete with trucks using new and improved roads and closed in 1933. Engine #9, Coach #3, and Flatcar #118 survive at the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum. The Maine Central Railroad bought the Knox & Lincoln Railroad in 1901 and ran it until 1959 carrying passengers and cargo, and after the State of Maine saved it in 1987, it came to be operated by the Maine Eastern Railroad.
