Mount Wilkinson rises above Vinings from the Chattahoochee River valley and remains a prominent landmark despite heavy modern development. Formerly called Signal Mountain and still often known as Vinings Mountain, it is associated with local legend, early settlement, and twentieth-century growth. In 1864, General William T. Sherman is said to have first seen Atlanta’s church spires from its summit. A small cemetery there holds Hardy Pace, founder of Vinings and operator of Pace’s Ferry. Its current name honors Mell B. Wilkinson, and the mountain’s scout-camp past survives in nearby place names even as office towers now occupy the summit.
