On September 19, 1863, at 4:30 p.m., Colonel Benjamin F. Scribner's Brigade of Baird's Division, Thomas' Corps, including the 38th Indiana under Lieutenant Colonel Daniel F. Griffin, 2nd Ohio under Major William T. Beatty, 33rd Ohio under Colonel Oscar F. Moore, 94th Ohio under Major Rue P. Hutchins, 10th Wisconsin under Lieutenant Colonel John H. Ely, and Battery A, 1st Michigan under Lieutenant Almerick W. Wilbur, arrived on this ground from the glade north of the Kelly field and recovered many of its wounded from the morning fight. At dusk, while advancing on the left of Starkweather's Brigade, which was then moving into action on the left of Johnson's Division, Scribner's Brigade made a slight wheel to the right in the gloom while Starkweather's made a similar movement to the left, and the two brigades fired into each other, adding immensely to the confusion of the night attack. At the close of the engagement, which lasted over an hour, both brigades fell back to the Kelly field.
