During the late summer and early fall of 1916, Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States, used the entire fifth floor of this building for his executive offices while he vacationed at Shadow Lawn, the Summer White House at West Long Branch. Here many of Wilson’s plans for re-election were formulated, and his staff counted the returns that showed he had defeated his Republican opponent, Charles Evans Hughes, on November 7, 1916.
