Nearly 300 German immigrants lost their lives when the sailing ship New Era wrecked off Deal Lake on November 13, 1854. Abner Allen, Allenhurst's earliest settler, was keeper of the local lifeboat house and the first rescuer to reach the scene of the shipwreck. The disaster played a role in establishing the U.S. Lifesaving Service, known today as the U.S. Coast Guard.
