Founded in 1952 and opened publicly as a non-profit in 1977, the Ukrainian Museum-Archives in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood preserves Ukrainian culture, the Ukrainian experience in America, and the history of Ukrainians in the city. Created by Leonid Bachynsky and Alexander Fedynsky in the postwar effort to save materials being destroyed or suppressed in Soviet Ukraine, it became both a local cultural center and a refuge for vulnerable historical records. Its vast collections include books, periodicals, Displaced Persons camp publications, art, recordings, photographs, and artifacts, and its partnerships and preservation work have made it a leading center for documenting exile, migration, and cultural survival in the 20th century.
