The Berkeley Pit: The Water Returns
Industry
5
During the years of underground mining, pumps kept groundwater from filling the underground workings. The main pump station was on the 3,900-foot level of the Kelley Mine. When the pumps were turned off in 1982, water began flowing back into the underground workings and the Berkeley Pit, and by 2012 the pit held 41.2 billion gallons of water.
